Grade 5/6

Hello, I am Toby Treu, one of the 5/6 team at Chester-Andover Elementary School.   This is my 23rd year here in this wonderfully supportive community and my 39th year of teaching, having taught at Flood Brook School in Londonderry, Park Street School in Springfield, and lead teacher at HeadStart in Cavendish.  I also taught in New York City Public Schools, The Town School in New York City, as well as the Greenvale School, in Glenhead, New York.   I have fulfilled my teaching endorsement having taught all grades, from Nursery School to 6th grade!

My educational background began with an Associates Degree from York College of Education of Pennsylvania.  I then attended Mills College of Education in New York City, graduating with a Bachelor’s of Science degree.  I began the Master of Education program at the Bank Street College of Education in New York before moving to Vermont.  I completed and received my Master of Education in Elementary Education from Antioch University New England, in Keene, New Hampshire.

As a teacher I work to teach to the many different learning styles of students to help them learn new skills and concepts. I use theme based projects and activities to help students demonstrate knowledge, show creativity, and find a successful avenue to use their abilities to show newly gained knowledge, always keeping a nurturing atmosphere where students are encouraged to take risks, learn from each other, and learn to increase their own academic responsibilities.

Mr. Frank Kelley and I continue to work together in a collaborative forum.  We have been designing new units of study for our classes, in which they learn how to use primary sources, to think like scientists, and to hold themselves to a high standard.

My favorite subjects are Reading and Social Studies.  For the third year in a row, I’ve read all the Dorothy Canfield Fisher Award nominated books, and my class has read more of these books than any other class.  I’ve visited five of the seven continents, and bring many of these cultural experiences back to my classroom.

My husband and I love to travel, cook, read and watch and participate in sports and music.  Both our daughters living in California  and our new son-in-law keep us traveling to and exploring the West Coast!
