I came to Chester-Andover Elementary School to teach and learn in the town where I live. The programs I offer immerse students in the world around them so what better place to do that than here, in Chester and Andover. My students work as mathematicians: solving problems, exploring math relationships, and seeing how numbers work. As readers, we read a variety of materials everyday. News articles, the latest fiction, textbooks, and historic documents are all part of our reading. Science starts out looking closely at the world. We ask questions, develop hypotheses (educated guesses) do experiments, and then share our findings with others. The world of history comes alive in social studies as we learn about our world by exploring what has happened in the past. Maps, journals, historical documents, photos, and historic sites are all part of the program. We use writing to keep track of all these ideas and experiences. We share our thoughts and dreams, our plans and our findings with our writing. Along the way, we discover more about how words become sentences, sentences become paragraphs, and paragraphs become a variety of written pieces. It’s been a joy to watch this approach to learning and teaching work well with students of all ages, in a variety of settings.

This fall I will be continuing my learning by participating in the Flow of History Fall Book Group. The readings will focus on the Civil Rights Movement. I’m looking forward to learning more about this interesting period.

Overall, life in a multi-age fifth/sixth grade is just wonderful right now. Check out the newsletters and other class materials that have been added to the website. I hope to have a class picture and a few other tidbits up online fairly soon. Contact me if you have comments, questions or suggestions.
