Patricia Gutierrez
Grades 5/6
Welcome to Mrs. Gutierrez’s 5/6 multiage classroom where my students are encouraged to question, experiment, and work collaboratively in a theme-based learning environment. Learners within my classroom are continually involved in project based activities: from writing original historical skits, building mousetrap cars and rockets, to creating and filming their own commercial products. The overriding philosophy of my curriculum is to ensure that each child develops the academic, social, and emotional skills needed to be a successful and supportive member of our learning environment. We work very hard and play very hard!
I have the distinct advantage of teaching my students for two years. The fifth and sixth grades are magical years where one is either psyched about new challenges or counting the minutes until the end of the day... I hope that as a teacher I facilitate an atmosphere of self-discovery, self-directedness and excitement about the world around us. Tolerance can surely be taught and we must work together to praise and celebrate each child’s uniqueness. Parent and community volunteers have been an integral part of my classroom for many years. Please feel free to join us for any project, activity or field trip.
As for my educational background: I received a BA in English from the State University of New York, completed one year of graduate work studying Latin American literature at Universidad de los Andes, Bogota, Colombia and earned an M.A.T. (Master’s of Arts in Teaching) from Colgate University. My teaching career began as a high school English teacher, morphed to teaching English and math to adults earning their GED’s and then came full circle to becoming an elementary educator at CAES.
I have been at CAES long enough to have taught several siblings from the same families, but so far have not taught any of my ex-students’ kids!
You may see me zipping up Interstate 91 or blazing a trail across the snowy roads of Grafton as I head to Chester from my home in Brattleboro at 6 :30 a.m.
