MISSION STATEMENT My mission this year  is to provide educational opportunities in a caring environment that will prepare students to meet the challenges of the future. WHAT DO Children LEARN? MATH Everyday calendar activities are used to review and enrich math. Our math program is the Everyday Math Program.  We  assign homelinks that compliment the lessons taught.  Children are expected to complete them and return them to class.  We also complete 3 portfolio problems. FACTS Specials:   Mon.   Music Tues. and Thurs. Phy.  Ed. Wed.  Art   Fri.  Library                 Class Size Our class has 9 girls and 11 boys;  20 children in all. LANGUAGE ARTS The area of language arts consists of Reading, Writing and Spelling.  We do a daily language paper.  We have  Writing Workshop each day.  We write pen pals in Springfield.   •  Spelling: The children will be learning to spell words in word families. We review Spelling rules.  Our Spelling is included in Our Reading Program.   •  Handwriting:   Our program is called Handwriting Without Tears. •  Writers Workshop: Children have opportunities for daily writing.  We will work on writing a narrative, report and a response to literature piece. •  Literature:   Children work in literacy groups; in leveled books. Children are expected to maintain a reading log and independently read 20 books.  We maintain a Literacy Profile on each child. SOCIAL STUDIES Global awareness and multicultural learning are stressed in our social studies program.  Students work on being a valued member of a learning community.  Map skills are also taught. The Scholastic News is used to study current events.  We will work on a healthy living theme.  We will participate in a pen pal program. ART Mrs. Reed conducts class with my students once a week in the art room. MUSIC Students attend vocal music class  once a week.  Classes are held in the vocal music room with Ms.  Austin. PHYSICAL EDUCATION P.E. classes are held twice a week with Mrs.  Lisle in the  school gym or outdoors as weather permits.  Students need athletic shoes to participate in P.E. SCIENCE Science is taught using a hands-on approach. We will study plants, rocks, magnets, the night sky. Snack We have a daily 10 min. healthy snack. COMPUTERS My classroom has 1 Apple computer.  My class may also arrange to go to the computer lab with permission.  Mrs.       Phillips will work with them on computer skills.     \
