Kathy Martens
Grade 1
My name is Kathy Martens and I will be teaching 1st grade during the 2006-2007 school year. I grew up in Chester and graduated from Green Mountain Union High School. I went to Eastern Mennonite College in Harrisonburg, Virginia and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Early Elementary Education. After graduation I decided to return to and teach in the town I have always loved. During the past number of years I have had classroom teaching experience in 1st grade, 2nd grade, 3rd grade, and multiage 1-2 classrooms. I also spent a few years teaching in an Early Education Resource Room.
When I am not busy in my classroom I enjoy reading, working in flower gardens, putting puzzles together, traveling, and visiting with family and friends.
I look forward to teaching many more children in Chester and Andover in the years to come and to continuing my own pursuit of life long learning.
In first grade we spend a lot of time learning how to read, write, and spell. In math we learn many new mathematical concepts that help children understand how we use numbers in our daily lives.

A lot of teaching is done in the context of thematic studies. The first and second grade teachers are in the process of determining the Science and Social Studies Themes for next year as there is new information from the State of Vermont to assimilate into the curriculum. These “themes” should be ready to post on this site over the summer.
